Lowther Castle & Gardens

There has been a castle at Lowther in Cumbria since the 12th century and the surviving structure was completed in 1812. The project opens the ruined castle, derelict stables and 130 acres of abandoned, seventeenth century gardens to the public for the first time. Miriam was closely involved in the successful grant funding application to save the ruin from collapse and create a major new visitor attraction that contributes to the rural economy. As Project Architect, she led the design team, secured statutory consents within the Lake District National Park and administered the construction contract. Over 100 craftsmen worked on the project using traditional building materials and techniques. The Grade II* listed castle ruin and stables have been consolidated, allowing them to be removed from the English Heritage Buildings at Risk Register. The stables have been transformed into facilities for visitors, including a public museum.
